By Ron Maxwell - CEO

For this year’s HSC graduates, life after school may look a little different as there’s no denying the pandemic has changed the game. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In many ways, it means more opportunities, particularly for those who think outside the box.

Study anytime, anywhere

More than ever before, tertiary study options are available online. This is perfect if you aren’t close to where you want to study or want more flexibility to combine study and work.

By now, you have extensive experience with learning from home, so you should have a good idea of what works for you and what doesn’t. Use it as a guide when considering whether you want to study online or face-to-face.

There are also several courses that blend online study with face-to-face learning. These give you the best of both worlds, ensuring you enjoy the flexibility but don’t miss out on the experience. Whether you choose university or a vocational education and training (VET) option, the chance to make friends and learn from and with each other is just as important as at school.

Build life and work experience on a gap year

A gap year offers a chance to save money and have a memorable experience. And what’s more, today’s employers are embracing the gap year and the life and workplace skills you build as a result.

For the classes that went before you in 2020 and 2021, the gap year was largely off the cards. Now with travel back on, it’s something you can consider. However, with additional health concerns, costs of travel and insurance requirements, it may be less appealing.

The great news is that you can have an amazing gap year without the headache, right here in Australia. Whether you are about the snow fields, outback, country or city travel, we have it all. And opportunities abound, with just about every tourist area crying out for hospitality workers.

So, whether you see yourself zooming down a mountain in Jindabyne or soaking up the sun in Far North Queensland, you can earn cash and build life and work experience before you settle into building your career.

If this is for you, arm yourself with the right skills to land a job. RSA certification is a must if you want to work in licensed venues, including pubs, restaurants and hotels. Barista certification will boost opportunities further, as qualified Baristas are in high demand.

Turn your passion into a career

You’ve probably heard a lot about university study at school, but it isn’t suited to everyone. If you haven’t found the right option, it’s worth checking out apprenticeships and traineeships.

While we often think of the traditional trades, there is a whole world of apprenticeship and traineeship options, from hospitality to engineering and healthcare. There really is something for everyone – whatever your passion.

An apprenticeship or traineeship is an excellent option for those who want to get out from behind the desk and start working in their chosen field, as they blend study and learning on the job. And with skill shortages in many of these industries, the career opportunities are endless, and the job outlook is excellent.

It is the perfect gateway if you dream of one day running your own business too. You’ll start working and building towards your goal from day one.
