One of the best parts of my role is seeing firsthand the impact our programs have on people's lives.
Today, as part of Adult Learners' Week, I attended VERTO's SEE (Skills for Education and Employment) Open Day in Broadmeadow, where I had the opportunity to meet participants, trainers, stakeholders and community partners involved in the program.
What struck me most was hearing directly from participants about their experiences. While the SEE program focuses on building language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills, it was clear that the benefits extend far beyond the classroom. Participants spoke about increased confidence, a renewed sense of purpose and feeling more connected to their community.
One participant, Rob, shared how much being part of the program has meant to him.
I've been through some tough times, and joining the SEE program has made a real difference. The trainers have always been there to support me, and I've formed some great friendships. It's more than just learning new skills; it's about having people around you who genuinely care, help build your confidence and help you keep moving forward.
Rob's story reinforced something I hear often across our programs: learning is about more than gaining new skills. It's about building confidence, creating connections and fostering a sense of belonging.
The name VERTO comes from the Latin word meaning "to transform", and today I saw that transformation firsthand. Whether it's gaining confidence, overcoming personal challenges, learning new skills or forming meaningful connections, it's inspiring to see how education can open doors and help people realise their potential.
The SEE program helps participants strengthen their language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills while providing a supportive environment where they can pursue employment, further education and personal goals. Hearing stories like Rob's was a powerful reminder of why lifelong learning is so important.
I would like to thank our dedicated SEE team for the passion and commitment they bring to supporting learners every day. My thanks also to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, our community partners and employers who continue to work alongside us to create opportunities for participants to succeed.
Adult Learners' Week is a reminder that learning doesn't stop when we leave school.
No matter our age or circumstances, there is always an opportunity to learn something new, build confidence and create positive change.
After spending time with our participants in Broadmeadow today, I was reminded that some of the most meaningful outcomes aren't measured in qualifications alone, but in the confidence gained, friendships formed and belief that a brighter future is possible.
