If you’re going to be in Year 10, 11 or 12 in NSW in 2023, you may be eligible to do a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT). If you haven’t heard of SBATs before, this is your lucky day. You are about to learn how you can get a head start on your career while you continue your school studies.

An SBAT is the perfect solution if you’re interested in building a career in an apprenticeship or traineeship industry and want to complete your HSC. You don’t have to choose between starting your career and staying on to Year 12. An SBAT is your opportunity to do both.

Work towards a qualification and earn while you learn

An SBAT involves studying towards a nationally recognised qualification, gaining real on-the-job experience and earning while you learn. While the requirements differ depending on your chosen field, you generally spend around one school day a week focused on your SBAT. You’ll split your time between vocational studies with a provider like VERTO and working on the job with an actual employer.

Studies contribute towards your HSC

Even better, your vocational studies aren’t separate from your HSC — they’re part of it. Your SBAT is equivalent to around 4 HSC units. And when you have completed your HSC, you can continue your apprenticeship, so you’ll immediately jump into an ongoing job.

You don’t have to continue, either. Even if you choose a different path after school, you’ll take away some fantastic workplace skills that will help you in whatever career path you pursue.

Choose from a great range of industries

There are opportunities to complete an SBAT in many different industries, including Aeroskills, Agriculture, Animal Care, Automotive, Beauty, Business, Construction, Electrotechnology, Finance, Floristry, Hairdressing, Healthcare, Horticulture, Hospitality, IT, Retail and Tourism and Transport. There really is something for everyone.
