When 16-year-old Muswellbrook local Jayden McPhie joined VERTO’s Transition to Work program in September 2025, he had a clear goal: he wanted to become a mechanic.
At his first few appointments, Jayden was quiet and understandably a little nervous. But with the steady guidance of his Case Manager, Ashlee Cuschieri, his confidence began to grow. As the weeks went on, he opened up more, showing his warm personality and sense of humour. It wasn’t long before he was speaking confidently about his future and the steps he was willing to take to get there.
Ashlee understood that growing Jayden’s belief in himself was just as important as building his qualifications. Together, they worked toward gaining certifications including his White Card, Working at Heights, Confined Spaces and Elevated Work Platform (EWP) tickets. These qualifications broadened his skills and expanded his employment options, while preparing him to step into new environments feeling capable and ready. Each new ticket represented more than a line on a resume; it was proof to Jayden that he could achieve what he set his mind to.
With these achievements behind him, Ashlee connected with a trusted local employer, Overdrive Mechanical Solutions, with whom she had built a strong working relationship. That introduction led to Jayden commencing as a Trades Assistant on 23 January 2026, where he’s gaining valuable hands-on experience directly aligned with his long-term goal of securing a mechanical apprenticeship.
“We’re proud to give local young people like Jayden a chance to get started in the trade,” said Dylan, Director at Overdrive Mechanical. “Backing the next generation is what keeps our industry moving forward, and we’re keen to see Jayden’s skills grow throughout 2026.”
VERTO ensured he stepped into his new role feeling prepared, providing essential PPE including boots, work pants and shirts. Behind the scenes, the team has continued collaborating with Overdrive, coordinating a wage subsidy to help maintain the sustainability of his position as he develops his skills.
To further support Jayden and ensure he meets the education requirements needed to formally begin his apprenticeship journey, VERTO helped him enrol in his Year 10 equivalent at TAFE, commencing in March.
The 16-year-old has embraced every opportunity that has come his way. With ongoing encouragement from VERTO, he has completed all required logbook hours for his driver licence and is simply waiting to turn 17 so he can progress to his P plates. He has also scheduled his bike licence course, further building his independence.
Reflecting on his journey, Jayden shared, “I’m really grateful to Overdrive for giving me a chance to get started, and to VERTO and Ashlee for helping me get here. The team have been so supportive from day one, and I’m keen to keep learning as much as I can.”

Through the Transition to Work program, he’s not just working toward a job; he’s building a future.
