After more than 20 years out of the workforce, Broken Hill local Fabio Benedetti is rebuilding his confidence, independence, and future through meaningful employment.
For a long time, the 47-year-old faced challenges that made it difficult to maintain steady work and struggled to find the right support. Previous experiences with employment services left him feeling discouraged, and over time, his confidence began to fade. Routines disappeared, and the idea of getting back into work felt overwhelming.
“When you’ve been out of work for that long, it’s hard to know where to start again,” Fabio said.
Fabio’s journey took a positive turn when he connected with VERTO’s Workforce Australia program and began working closely with Team Leader Bree Bailey over the past 12 months.
Bree took the time to understand Fabio’s situation, strengths, and goals for the future. Together, they developed a practical pathway back into employment, focusing on building routine, confidence, and job-ready skills.
“Fabio had a lot of potential. He just needed someone to take the time to understand what would work for him,” Bree said.
As part of this journey, Fabio completed VERTO’s Digital Ready course, helping him feel more comfortable with technology and job searching. He also gained his Conduct Civil Construction Skid Steer Operations (RIIMPO318F) qualification through Robinson College, creating additional opportunities in labouring roles.
At the same time, Bree supported him to obtain essential checks, including his Working with Children Check, NDIS Check, and Police Check, removing key barriers to employment.
At the start of 2026, an opportunity presented itself.
Local business My Maid Support, a cleaning company providing commercial, domestic and NDIS services, reached out to Bree seeking a suitable candidate. Fabio was put forward for the opportunity, impressed at the interview, and commenced employment just a few days later in a role cleaning company vehicles.
“I just wanted a chance to prove I could do the job,” Fabio said. “Once I got started, I realised I really enjoyed it.”
Fabio quickly made an impression. His reliability, attention to detail, and pride in his work stood out, and his contribution soon began to shape more than just his own future.
Recognising the quality of his work, the business expanded into professional car detailing, creating new opportunities for growth.
“Fabio has taken real ownership of his role,” Bree said. “The way he approaches his work has had a really positive impact on the business.”
With further support from VERTO, Fabio was provided with work clothing and ongoing assistance as he settled into his role. Bree is also continuing to support him in renewing his driver’s licence, helping him work towards greater independence.
Now more than three months into his role, Fabio is thriving. For him, the impact goes far beyond having a job. Returning to work has restored his confidence, provided financial independence, and given him a renewed sense of purpose.
“It’s made a big difference,” Fabio said. “You feel better in yourself when you’ve got something to focus on and somewhere to be.”
Looking ahead, Fabio has set clear goals for his future. He hopes to purchase a caravan to give him flexibility in his living arrangements, and eventually a car so he can travel and explore new opportunities.
“Seeing Fabio where he is now has been incredibly rewarding,” Bree said. “He’s built his confidence step by step and is starting to see what’s possible for himself again.”
Fabio’s story is a powerful reminder that long-term unemployment does not define a person’s future. With the right guidance, practical support, and an employer willing to give someone a chance, people can rebuild their confidence and create real, positive change.
