Cassidy Golding, a first-year Transmission Lines Apprentice at Transgrid, is breaking new ground as the first female to take on this role in 15 years. Based in Newcastle, her journey to this pivotal position is an inspiring story of determination and passion.
Starting her career as a hairdresser, Cassidy quickly realised her passion for hands-on work went beyond the salon. After discovering the trades sector and assisting with electrical projects, she found her true calling. It was during an apprenticeship interview that she was introduced to the world of transmission lines, and she knew instantly that this was where her future lay.
“I’ve always loved being hands-on,” Cassidy said. “The process of troubleshooting, finding solutions, and seeing the result in a working piece of equipment gives me so much satisfaction.”
Cassidy is thriving in her role at Transgrid, where the physical demands of the job feel more like a workout than work. She enjoys scaling transmission towers that stand up to 80 metres tall, often relishing the view from the top. But what she loves most is the camaraderie and support of her teammates. “I love the family-like culture at work and being treated as an equal by my male colleagues. It makes the experience so rewarding.”
The Australian Government’s New Energy Apprenticeships Mentoring Program, now available both in Newcastle and nationwide through VERTO, is designed to assist apprentices like Cassidy as they navigate careers in the clean energy sector.
As part of the government's efforts to meet Net Zero Plan targets, the program aims to motivate and support apprentices working in this evolving industry.
Offering expert guidance and advice from seasoned industry mentors, the program also fosters peer support and networking opportunities, ensuring that apprentices across Australia have the resources they need to thrive in the clean energy sector.
VERTO Chief Executive, Ron Maxwell, emphasised that dedicated apprentices like Cassidy deserve all the support the industry can provide.
“Clean energy is an expanding field, and apprentices like Cassidy are set to shape the future for all of us,” Mr. Maxwell said.
“We are thrilled to have been chosen by the Australian Government to deliver the New Energy Apprenticeships Mentoring Program and to contribute significantly to the growth of this vital industry.”
