When Lily Walker left school in year 11, she didn’t consider herself to be academically inclined and went in search of employment and training opportunities outside the classroom.
It’s a decision that has paid off for the 18-year-old who has since completed a traineeship with not-for-profit training and apprenticeships provider, VERTO, in Orange.
Lily says she’s surprised at how much she’s enjoying learning on the job and working in a team environment.
“I finished my Certificate III in Business Administration in 10 months and I’m now about to start a Certificate IV in Employment Services,” she said.
“I’m amazed at the progress I’ve made in a short amount of time, and it validates my decision to leave school earlier than planned – it just wasn’t the right fit for me.
“I’d encourage others to consider a traineeship as it can lead you to your dream job and allow you to learn, work and earn at the same time.
“VERTO has given me such an amazing opportunity to expand my skills and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given since I started with the organisation,” Lily said.
Traineeships are similar to apprenticeships, but they concentrate on vocational or job areas such as office administration, information technology, business or hospitality – just to name a few.
VERTO’s Team Leader in Orange, Dominique Munday, said Lily was a great role model for other young people in the region who are considering their employment and training options.
