“Gotta keep the wife happy.” It’s a line Lloyd Parkin says with a smile, but it speaks to something deeper. After seven months out of work, Lloyd was ready to feel like himself again.
At 61, stepping away from the workforce was never part of the plan. With experience as a Trade Assistant, Machine Operator, Head Welder and Production Worker, Lloyd had spent most of his life in hands-on roles. Being out of work began to take its toll, not only financially, but also on his confidence and mental wellbeing.
That’s when Lloyd connected with VERTO’s Inclusive Employment Australia program in Browns Plains in November 2025. From the outset, he made his goal clear. He wanted to return to work, stay active, and regain his sense of purpose.
“I just wanted to get back out there, feel useful again,” Lloyd said. “You get used to working your whole life, so when that stops, it really does affect you.”
But Lloyd’s path back to work was not without its challenges. He had been managing ongoing knee issues for years and is still awaiting a knee replacement. The physical strain of his previous role had forced him to step away, so finding the right job, one that worked with his body rather than against it, was essential.
Within two weeks, his Employment Consultant, Alayna Whiteside had connected Lloyd with an opportunity through Total Facility Group, an employer VERTO had built a strong relationship with. The role was a strong match for Lloyd’s mechanical knowledge and forklift experience, making him a natural fit.
“Lloyd was highly motivated to get back into work and had a strong employment history, so it was really about finding the right opportunity that suited his needs,” Alayna said.
After a phone interview with Manager Daniel Holland, it was clear Lloyd had what they were looking for.
Before long, onboarding paperwork was underway, followed by an induction at the Coles Distribution Centre in Parkinson. By 1 December 2025, Lloyd was back where he wanted to be, working as a Battery Bull Operator.
With further support from VERTO, Alayna also helped Lloyd to organise essential PPE, ensuring he was ready to start work with confidence.
Now working permanent part-time hours, Lloyd has found a rhythm that suits him, keeping him active while supporting his physical needs. Three months on, he has settled in well with his team, his experience proving invaluable. More importantly, he has regained his independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose, making a real difference in his day-to-day life.
“It’s good for your head, just being back into a routine and feeling like you’re contributing again,” Lloyd said.
Outside of work, that positive change continues. With a bit more financial freedom, Lloyd has been able to return to the things he enjoys, including riding his motorbikes. And, as he puts it, things are going well at home too.
“This is exactly what the program is about, supporting people to find meaningful employment that works for them and seeing the positive impact that can have on their confidence and wellbeing,” Alayna said.
Sometimes, it’s the simple things that matter most. Lloyd’s journey is a reminder of the powerful link between meaningful employment, a sense of purpose, and improved mental wellbeing.
