Sometimes, a single story perfectly captures why the Transition to Work program exists. For 21-year-old Oscar, the program provided more than just a job. It helped him find stability, purpose, and a workplace where he is genuinely valued.
A Clear Goal and the Right Support
When Oscar first connected with VERTO’s Transition to Work program, he knew exactly what he wanted. He was eager to return to farm work, something he had enjoyed when he was younger. Working closely with VERTO’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Ry Freilich, Oscar received tailored support to help turn that goal into reality. Ry took the time to understand Oscar’s strengths, interests, and ambitions, and then worked to find an employer who would be the right fit.
Building the Right Employer Partnership
Through strong communication, genuine rapport, and ongoing collaboration, Ry established a relationship with Nice-Feilds Farm in Tuckurimba. This partnership led to Oscar being offered a trial placement as an egg packer and general farm hand.
From day one, Oscar made a strong impression. He arrived with enthusiasm, reliability, and a positive attitude that quickly stood out. He did not just complete the tasks asked of him. Whether packing eggs, helping with animals, or lending a hand wherever needed, Oscar embraced the work and became part of the daily rhythm of the farm. “Oscar didn’t just turn up and do the job,” Ry said. “He embraced every task, showed genuine enthusiasm, and quickly became someone the team could rely on.”
From Trial to Permanent Employment
Oscar’s trial was an immediate success. His strong work ethic and willingness to learn led Nice-Feilds Farm to offer him a permanent position.
However, the journey did not stop there.
When Oscar later lost his driver’s licence, his employment could easily have been placed at risk. Instead, his employer demonstrated extraordinary support.
Recognising Oscar’s consistency, attitude, and contribution to the farm, Nice-Feilds Farm purchased a caravan so Oscar could live on the property and continue working as a live-in egg packer and farm hand.
A Life-Changing Outcome
Today, Oscar has stability, independence, and a sense of belonging in a workplace that truly supports him. His story is a powerful example of what meaningful employment looks like when young people are given the right guidance and employers are willing to invest in people, not just positions. “This is exactly what Transition to Work is about,” Ry said. “It’s about backing young people, building strong relationships with employers, and creating outcomes that genuinely change lives.”
