At just 23, Zoe Gibbons from Oberon is proving that determination, hard work, and the right support can transform challenges into opportunities. As a single mum to a young child, Zoe joined VERTO’s Parent Pathways program earlier this year looking for that extra encouragement and guidance, someone in her corner as she balanced study, parenting, and her future career.
At the time, Zoe was completing her Diploma of Nursing at TAFE NSW and undertaking placement at Bathurst Hospital. The long shifts and financial strain were challenging, but with the help of VERTO Parent Pathways mentor, Antoinette Burrell, Zoe found the support to keep going.
Antoinette helped Zoe with essentials like work clothes and compression socks, ensuring she could manage the physical demands of being on her feet all day. She also supported Zoe by covering her Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration, which allowed Zoe to transition from an Assistant in Nursing to a paid Enrolled Nurse.
That support paid off quickly. Zoe was offered three different roles at Bathurst Hospital, ultimately choosing to work in the Operating Theatre team, which has been an exciting step in her career.
“The help and financial support I received from the program has been life-changing,” Zoe said. “It meant I could focus on my placement, say yes to work opportunities, and still be there for my family without worrying about the extra costs. I always knew I could rely on Antoinette to be there, and that made such a difference.”
Zoe’s journey doesn’t stop here. She has now enrolled in her Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, continuing her path toward a long-term career in healthcare. For Antoinette, supporting Zoe has been a privilege.
“Zoe is such a wonderful and strong woman, and a delight to help,” she said. “She has the determination and compassion that will make her an incredible nurse. She’s exactly the kind of person you’d want by your side in a hospital.”
Zoe’s next chapter is already underway, with casual work at Bathurst Hospital giving her both stability and valuable experience as she studies toward her degree. With Antoinette’s support and her own determination, Zoe is creating a future she and her family can be proud of.
