At just 24 years old, Jack Cantrill from Coleambally has transformed his career path from uncertainty to success, launching RAD Rural Auto Detailing, a thriving mobile detailing business servicing everything from cars to agricultural machinery across the Riverina region.
Before starting his business, Jack worked various jobs, including tyre fitting, but struggled to find fulfillment. Frustrated by poor workplace conditions, he decided to take control of his own future.
“I never really thought about running my own business, but when I saw a 17-year old in my town succeed, it got me thinking. I saw potential in myself, so I gave it a go,” Jack said.
Jack took immediate action. He quit his job, secured an ABN, and took on small jobs for family and friends. But it wasn’t until he was introduced to VERTO’s Self-Employment Assistance program that he gained the knowledge and support needed to turn his business into a sustainable and growing venture.
Through the program, Jack met VERTO’s Self-Employment Assistance facilitator, Nathaniel Dalgleish, who helped him navigate business structures, track finances, and refine his marketing strategy.
“Nathaniel gave me great business advice, showed me how to track my finances, and supported me through Small Business Coaching,” Jack said.
Jack’s hard work quickly paid off. Within months, he landed a contract with Hutcheon & Pearce to detail brand-new tractors, a turning point for his business.
“Securing a contract with Hutcheon & Pearce was a game-changer. And becoming fully mobile made a huge difference. I bought a ute and got it fitted out, which made everything easier,” he said.
Running a business is demanding, but Jack also has another important role, being a father of two daughters.
“I’m grateful my partner helps a lot, and being my own boss gives me more flexibility with family time. I can take time off when I need to, help my wife, and spend a day with the kids when I want.”
Jack has ambitious plans for the future. As he completes his first financial year, he’s aiming to open a shopfront to take on more trucks and agricultural vehicles, while continuing to run his mobile service.
His advice for others considering self-employment?
