For 16-year-old Bailey Beckingham, finding the right learning environment made all the difference.
As a proud Kamilaroi young woman, Bailey joined VERTO’s Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program in Charlestown in October 2025, after facing challenges with mainstream schooling and struggling with self-belief.
What she found through SEE was something completely different.
The SEE program helps participants improve skills like reading, writing, maths, digital literacy and communication, while also helping them build confidence and prepare for future employment or study pathways.
“SEE has been an experience that was unexpected in a good way,” Bailey said. “It’s a really enjoyable environment and it’s helped me understand what I want to do in life and how to get there.”
Working closely with Trainer Paula Quigley-Walker, Bailey slowly began believing in herself and her abilities.
“Bailey has grown so much since starting the program,” Paula said. “She’s become more confident speaking up, backing herself, and thinking positively about her future. It’s been really special to watch.”
As Bailey’s confidence grew, so did her willingness to try new things.
When the opportunity came up to apply for a job at KFC Glendale through local connections, the SEE team supported Bailey through every step of the process. From helping her put together a resume and cover letter, to interview preparation and working through the online onboarding modules, the team made sure she never felt alone navigating her first experience with employment.
For the 16-year-old, it was more than simply getting a job. It was proof that she was capable.
“Paula has helped me in so many ways,” Bailey said. “She’s helped me think about what I want to do later on in life and helped me speak up and work towards my goals.”
Paula said watching Bailey come out of her shell has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
“She just needed the right support around her,” Paula said. “Once she felt comfortable and started believing in herself, you could really see her flourishing as her confidence grew in your own abilities and worth.”
Now balancing work and study, Bailey continues attending the SEE program two days a week as she works towards her Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways.
Looking ahead, she already has big dreams for the future.
Bailey hopes to continue her studies at TAFE in Beauty Services and one day open her own lash salon.
“The SEE program gives you a chance to focus on what you want in life,” Bailey said. “It helped me learn without feeling trapped in school, and that made a big difference for me.”
Her journey is a powerful reminder that every young person’s path looks different. With the right support, encouragement, and opportunities, confidence can grow and futures can change.
