With just one month to go, VERTO is proud to support our Disability Ambassador Sam Longmore as she prepares to take on an extraordinary challenge to raise funds and awareness for rural mental health.
From 27 June to 4 July 2026, Sam will travel 400 kilometres across regional New South Wales in her everyday wheelchair. The journey will take her from Corowa to Yass over eight days, averaging more than 50 kilometres each day.
The initiative, known as The Big Wheel – Push for Purpose, aims to raise $200,000 for two organisations supporting rural communities: Rural Aid and Riverina Bluebell.
Sam said the idea began simply, with a note written at her kitchen table.
“Four months ago I wrote ‘The Big Wheel – Charity – Mental Health – Raise $200,000’ in my phone,” she said.
“If Nedd Brockmann can run 4,000 kilometres across Australia, surely I can wheel 400.”
Sam’s journey will pass through a number of regional communities including Howlong, Albury, Culcairn, Wagga Wagga, Junee, Cootamundra, Harden and Binalong before finishing in Yass.
While the physical challenge is significant, Sam says the purpose behind it is what matters most.
“This isn’t just about the kilometres,” she said. “It’s about raising awareness, starting conversations, and supporting people doing it tough in rural Australia.”
Mental health challenges affect people across all communities, but barriers such as distance, access to services and stigma can make it harder for people in rural areas to seek support.
VERTO CEO Ron Maxwell said Sam’s commitment reflects the organisation’s values and its ongoing focus on supporting inclusive and resilient communities.
“Sam’s determination and leadership are truly inspiring. The Big Wheel is not only a remarkable physical achievement, but a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health support in regional Australia,” Mr Maxwell said.
“We are incredibly proud to stand behind Sam as our Disability Ambassador and support this important cause.”
Sam has been a wheelchair user for more than 12 years and is paralysed down her right-hand side. She hopes this journey will challenge perceptions and inspire others while raising critical funds.
The community is encouraged to support The Big Wheel by donating, sharing Sam’s story or cheering her on along the route.
The journey will conclude with a community celebration at the Yass Racecourse on 4 July.
