With support from Parent Pathways, Sarah is creating new opportunities for herself and her family

For many parents with young children, taking that first step back into study or work after time away can feel like the hardest part. Between caring for a child and managing everyday responsibilities, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

When Sarah Jory joined the Parent Pathways program in Lithgow in January 2025, she had been out of the workforce for five years while raising her young child. Like many parents, she knew she wanted more for her future, but just needed the right support to get started.

Through Parent Pathways, Sarah began turning that intention into action.

With guidance from her mentor, Lily Pottinger, Sarah enrolled in a Certificate III in Community Services, a pathway that reflects her passion for helping others. Since then, she has successfully completed the theory component of her course and is preparing to begin her work placement.

"At first, it felt a bit overwhelming to get started again," Sarah shared. "But having someone there to guide me made a big difference. It helped me take that first step."

That first step has led to many more.

Alongside her studies, Sarah has moved closer to employment, recently securing casual work at the Lithgow High School canteen. She has also completed her First Aid Certificate, adding to her growing skillset. Each milestone has helped build her confidence and reinforce that she is on the right path.

With the support of the program, Sarah has also received practical assistance, including a laptop and food vouchers, helping to ease some of the everyday pressures and allowing her to focus on her goals.

Reflecting on her journey, Sarah shared:

"The program has been very helpful, and Lily was incredibly supportive. It made a real difference to have someone there while going through what I have been through. I highly recommend the program."

Lily says it has been a pleasure to be part of Sarah’s journey:

"Sarah has shown incredible determination. She set clear goals from the beginning and has worked steadily towards them, even while balancing the responsibilities of being a mum. It’s been wonderful to see her confidence grow."

Today, Sarah is not only working and studying, but also looking ahead with a clear sense of purpose. Her goal is to work in community services, supporting women and children experiencing domestic violence.

"I want to be able to help others who are going through tough times," she said. "If I can make a difference for even one person, that would mean a lot."

Sarah’s story is a reminder that with the right support, even small steps can lead to meaningful change. For parents of children under six who may be unsure about where to start, our team can help you map a personalised plan that feels achievable, with encouragement and guidance every step of the way.
